What Happens When an AI Assistant Answers Every Call You Miss

I replaced my own voicemail with an AI assistant, then turned it into a 24/7 call screener. Here's what it does and why it's worth it for a busy owner.

Watch: I Replaced My Voicemail With an AI Agent (Retell AI Tutorial)

I replaced my voicemail with an AI agent, and it's the one running on my phone right now. When I hit decline, don't answer, or my phone's off, the call goes to Amy, my AI executive assistant, instead of a beep nobody wants to leave a message after.

What a caller hears

In my demo, a guy named Tom calls and asks if I'm around. Amy tells him no, I'm afraid not, he's pretending to be very important right now. Tom asks how much a voice agent costs. Amy explains it depends on the integrations and call volume, and that every agent is scoped and priced case by case. Then she offers to take a message so I can send him a quote.

She asks, "Can I use the number you're calling from?" instead of making him read out ten digits. Small thing, but it makes the call feel a lot smoother.

Her whole job is simple. Screen out spam and politely end those calls. Answer basic questions about my business. And for everyone else, take a message: name, callback number, and the reason for the call.

What I get after the call

A few seconds after Tom hung up, an email landed in my inbox. Who called, why, their number, a summary, and the transcript, plus a button to call them right back. Everything's automated.

It's a safety net. If I hit decline, don't answer, or my phone's off, I always know every single call got handled.

It also didn't take much. Retell's builder drafted the first version of the agent in under 5 minutes from my description, the phone number costs $2 a month, and pointing my real line at it was a forwarding code from my carrier typed into my phone. One gotcha if you're on iPhone: turn off Live Voicemail, because it seems to interfere.

From safety net to 24/7 screener

Here's where it gets more interesting. If the AI can already handle the calls I miss, why only use it when I miss them? The second version answers every call first and only brings me in when I'm actually needed. Perfect if you're getting buried in spam calls and don't want your day interrupted.

I told it exactly who gets through: anyone calling about Oceanside AI Solutions or a voice agent, and my wife. Hopefully nobody pretends to be my wife.

Everyone else gets a few qualifying questions, like where they heard about me. "We met at a conference" is a lot better than "I saw him on YouTube and got his number." The agent uses some judgment there.

When someone qualifies, it does a warm transfer. It rings me first with a quick heads up, like "I've got your wife on the line" or "I've got a hot prospect on the line," and then connects us.

It remembers who called

I also turned on caller memory, so if Bob calls three times, the agent remembers Bob. When I tested it, I called in saying I'd been promised a free voice agent, hung up, then called back and asked if she remembered why I called last time. She did, and picked right back up where we left off. That's what a real assistant would do.

Since it now answers every call, I changed the emails too. I only get one when it matters: a transfer that fails because I didn't pick up, or a conversation the agent judges as high value. No emails for spam, sales pitches, or tire kickers wasting my agent's time.

Pick the level that fits you

We started with something incredibly simple, replacing voicemail, and turned that same agent into a 24/7 screener with transfers, caller memory, and post call summaries. You can stop at whichever level actually makes sense for you.

The point is you don't need some massive complicated system to make your phone life dramatically easier. And if you want something like this built for your business, that's exactly what we do.
